Starting out on the web  Try these sites if you are new to the web.

Kids Domain  has games, stories and art by kids from around the world, how crayons are made, craft ideas

Arthur the Aardvark's page with all the characters from the Arthur books.
 

 



Kids Search the Web Here are different web guides for kids, for school work and for fun.

KidsClick! allows you to put in a subject (ex: bats) and get a list of sites on that subject.It has categories so you can explore an area (Weird & Mysterious, Sports and Recreation).

Yahooligans is a web guide for kids.  Lots of homework helpers and lots of fun places to explore.

Ask Jeeves for Kids   You can ask a question to this directory of carefully picked sites.
 

Help with your homework
You can find lots of information on the web, but it usually takes longer to find what you want than it would to go to the library and look it up.  It helps to
        1) Know what questions you want to answer before you start
        2) Have someone older who can help read the hard words
        3) Have patience!  You may have to go through lots of stuff you don't want.
        4) Go exploring before you try using the web for homework.  Go looking for sites that talk about what you are learning in class.

Kids on the Web: Homework Tools has links to online dictionaries, encyclopedias and other reference sources and links to LOTS of other homework helping sites, including some for parents.

My Virtual Reference Desk has a link to children's authors info, lots of pages on math, science, and writing, an Ask the Experts section and more.

PJ Pinchbeck's Homework Helper   B.J. and his dad teamed up with the Discovery Channel web site and created a great homework source.

Information Please Kids' Almanac  On-line dictionary, encyclopedia and homework helper.

National Geographic World On Line   National Geographic\'s magazine for kids.

Education 4 Kids  has a good way to practice math facts.  You can tell it how hard you want the problems.

Just for Kids, a list of homework and fun sites from the Springfield City Library web site.

TechEncyclopedia - actually, more of a dictionary.  Find out definitions of any computer term, concept or buzz word.

Kids' Place  games and activities, check it out!  For kids from 3rd to 8th grade from publisher Houghton-Mifflin.

Funbrain - Educational games for kids.  You can search for games by subject and age.

Madlib-o-matic - Create your own Madlibs, a group game that creates wacky funny stories.

Learn words in American Sign Language with animated pictures.

White House for Kids - explore the White House with Socks the cat and Buddy the dog as your guides.

Animals on the web

NetVet and the Electronic Zoo - set up by a veterinarian

Birmingham Zoo with lots of animal pictures, some need special software (which you can download).

Children's Butterfly Site - if you like butterflies, check this out!

Rainforest animal research
    Animals of the Rainforest - choose from amphibians, birds, fish, insects, mammals and reptiles
            for pictures and information.

    Tropical Rainforest Animals - information and pictures of 14 animals

    More Rainforest Animals - This site has lists of snakes, mammals, birds and insects.  Students
            have drawn pictures of the animals.

    Howler Monkeys - two photos and some information about these mammals.

    Kid Explorer Video Clips - short videos of tiger, toucan, ocelot, crocodiles, monkeys,
            green snake and baby lions.
 


 


Massachusetts Children's Book Award  - Fourth, fifth and sixth graders in Massachusetts vote and give this award to a book each year.  The Southwick Public Library and the Woodland School Library have the books that have been nominated.  Read more about the award at this web site.
